Ghanaian Day Names and the Stories They Carry
In the Akan naming system, a child receives a name corresponding to the day of the week on which they were born, with separate forms for male and female.
The pattern
Saturday gives Kwame and Ama. Friday gives Kofi and Afua. Sunday gives Kwasi and Akosua. The system is regular, and it is used alongside other given names rather than instead of them.
Because the pattern is shared, a day name carries immediate recognition across a very large number of people.
Character and caution
Each day is traditionally associated with certain qualities. These associations are widely known and lightly held — closer to a shared reference than to a belief system, for most people today.
