The Meaning Behind Selected Adinkra Symbols
Adinkra is a system of symbols developed among the Akan, each associated with a proverb or a concept. It is widely reproduced and frequently misused.
A few symbols, stated plainly
Gye Nyame expresses the supremacy of God. Sankofa is commonly rendered as the instruction to return and retrieve what was left behind. Nkyinkyim speaks to changeability and resilience in the face of a life that does not run straight.
These are summaries, not definitions. Each symbol sits inside a proverb, and the proverb sits inside a context of use.
How we use the geometry
Our approach is to work with the discipline of Adinkra — symmetry, repetition, meaning held in structure — rather than to reprint specific symbols as decoration.
Where a symbol is used directly, it is named, credited and explained in the product story. Where it is not, we say so.
Why the distinction matters
A symbol reproduced without its proverb becomes a pattern. That is how a cultural language gets emptied out.
Treating the geometry as a design system, and the symbols as language, keeps the two from collapsing into each other.
